Tiny bikes weighing just 160 pounds with a stunning 90 horsepower – and no brakes.
On the same weekend that drivers in Indianapolis are prepping for their high-profile 200 laps around the motor speedway, the original mad dogs, the speedway motorcycle racers, are making their debut as “The Fastest Show in Las Vegas.”
The Sin City Speedway ( www.sincityspeedwaylv.com ), a 2,000 capacity facility located just south of the world famous Strip at the corner of Sunset and Las Vegas Boulevard — and next to the Las Vegas Sports Arena — is set for its grand opening on Saturday, May 26. Gates open at 7 p.m. The opening ceremonies commence at 7:30 p.m. and the racing starts at 8 p.m.
The promoters of the venue announced that three time and current AMA National Speedway Champion Billy Janniro had signed up to race on opening night. Nicknamed “The Kid,” Janniro is also a four-time and current SRA U.S. National Speedway Champion, and two time and current California Speedway Champion.
Pam “Pinky” Bennett, one of the few female Speedway Motorcycle Racers, is coming out of retirement to participate on opening night, whose festivities include a display of select classic cars by Hot Rod City, a multi faceted, Las Vegas-based automotive Mecca that celebrated its grand opening on May 12.
Continuing the tradition of extreme popularity that the grassroots motorsport has enjoyed throughout Southern and Northern California for over 40 years, Sin City Speedway trumpets the fact that “these 500cc alcohol burning motorcycles with no brakes are here in a big way.”
The prime location of the Sin City Speedway allows patrons to enjoy the 20 or so races per night while watching planes fly overhead and land at nearby McCarran International Airport.
The venue, which will host racing nights on the last Saturday of every month for its first six months in addition to a July 4th extravaganza, was founded by top professional racers Gene Woods and Sammy Tanner, along with longtime announcer, actor Allen Fife.
