The Friday Motorcycle Chain Links – Interweb Motorcycle News Excellence

It’s Friday once again, it’s nearly 50 degrees here in Michigan, and if you don’t know much about our fair state, it should be about ten below zero. The current temperature makes me happy, and so I’ll spread the happy your way.

Before I hit the highway for Happy Hour with the wrecking crew, I took the time to put together a page of our favorite stuff from the Motorcycling Internet.

If you dig motorcycles with the fervor I do, you’re sure to like what these greasy motorcycle types have on offer.

Enjoy…and give them some link-clicky love. Pixels don’t come cheap these days, pard…

Build Your Own Foundry

Those gorgeous wooden casting patterns Aniket made for the upcoming 1000cc Musket really bring back memories from the past. Way back in time, 1970 to be exact, I spent a few weeks in the summer, working in a brass foundry, that was about all of the time I was willing to devote to getting covered in black sand every day, but it was a fascinating place…

The Kneeslider

Ola, Senor

I’ve always imagined BMW Motorrad designers to be technicians in white lab coats. So I was surprised to discover that the leader of BMW’s motorcycle design team is a freewheelin’ Swede with a passion for old-school choppers. Ola Stenegard studied Industrial Design in Stockholm and worked for SAAB and Indian Motorcycles before joining BMW in 2003. “I grew up in a garage, more or less,” he says. “My older brother was into bikes. My Dad taught me how to weld almost before I could read, and Mom taught me how to draw. Eventually I connected the two.” Stenegard’s portfolio includes the HP2 Sport and the S1000RR, the superbike that’s currently giving the Japanese ‘Big Four’ serious headaches. We gave him a headache too—with the traditional ten questions of the Bike EXIF interview…

Shoot It Like You Stole It

Shooting fast-moving motorcycles well with a video camera is bloody hard. I should know, I’ve been filming cars and bikes for TV for over 10 years and even now I sometimes get it wrong. Bikes especially are very hard to shoot well, they’re much more difficult than cars. They’re dynamic, relatively small and if you’re trying to shoot video of your mates or yourself looking fast on your bike, you can shoot for hours and be really disappointed with what you get when you get back home. Bikes too small in the frame, loads of wobble in your shots, dull-looking locations – it’s really not easy. But get it right and a fast-moving motorcycle looks incredible…

Eat Dirt From Paris to Dakar

The terrible sand dunes of Fiambala are done, and this time the weather helped everyone a little hand. It had been raining for days before the day all motorcycle had to cross the frightening sand dunes, and now the sand was harder and firmer for motorcycles.

Chances were that you would not get as stuck as in previous editions of the race. Cyril Despres took the most advantage of it, and beat his arch-rival, Marc Coma , to the finish, increasing his lead. But the race is only over when the fat lady sings. Dutchman Frans Verhoeven  got problems and lost his 3rd place, replaced by Helder Rodrigues
